Eco-friendly meets space tech The European Space Agency (ESA) is taking an innovative approach to lunar mission preparation, according to DesignBoom. The agency’s new FLEXhab training facility, designed by SAGA Space Architects, will prepare astronauts for moon missions starting in 2026. This innovative structure stands ready at the European Astronaut Center in Cologne, where training missions began in March 2025.
Space-grade comfort redefined The facility can accommodate four astronauts for up to 30 days, providing them with essential training environments. « Large parts of the interior are 3D printed using polymer-composite-made polypropylene as well as 40 percent of wood fibers, » reports DesignBoom. The structure features a laboratory equipped with experimental stations and communication tools, alongside a galley that doubles as a leisure area.

Breaking training traditions While conventional astronaut training often relies on separate facilities for different aspects of space preparation, FLEXhab takes an integrated approach. The habitat includes an innovative airlock system that doubles as a hygiene facility. « The airlock can be hosed down to prevent dust contamination between EVA missions, » explains DesignBoom, highlighting SAGA Space Architects’ practical approach to space architecture.
