Thus, Curiosity, the Mars rover, transmits its data at a maximum rate of a few hundred kbit/s, depending on the distance between Mars and Earth. To send large images and data sets, it first stores them onboard, then transmits them in small packets, which takes time. « We downlinked about 10 minutes of duplicated spacecraft data…This represents a significant milestone, » said Meera Srinivasan, DSOC’s operations lead, in a NASA news, « showing how optical comms can interface with a spacecraft’s radio system. »
