SuperLimbs: No More Stumbling on the Moon?

MIT News recently unveiled an exciting innovation in space technology: SuperLimbs, a wearable robotic system designed to help astronauts recover from falls and conserve energy during extended lunar missions. As part of NASA’s Artemis program, this cutting-edge device could revolutionize the way we explore and establish a sustainable presence on the moon.

The Moonwalking Struggle

The moon’s low-gravity environment, coupled with the restrictive nature of spacesuits, can make it difficult for astronauts to regain their footing after a stumble. Harry Asada, professor of mechanical engineering at MIT, explained to MIT News, « Astronauts are physically very capable, but they can struggle on the moon, where gravity is one-sixth that of Earth’s but their inertia is still the same. We want to provide a safe way for astronauts to get back on their feet if they fall. »

The Robo-Arms to the Rescue!

Enter SuperLimbs, a system of backpack-mounted robotic arms that adapt to the user’s movements, providing support and assistance as needed. The MIT engineers behind SuperLimbs used ergonomic experiments to model how humans stand up and designed a controller around that trajectory, ensuring the system is intuitive and effective. The development of SuperLimbs also involved an AI-driven design optimization process, resulting in an energy-efficient version of the wearable robot.

Addressing the Weighty Issue

The addition of any extra equipment to a spacesuit raises concerns about weight and bulk, which could hinder astronauts’ movements or pose new risks. The MIT team is aware of these issues and plans to address them by streamlining the design, minimizing the weight of its parts and motors, and testing the system in low-gravity simulators. Erik Ballesteros, an MIT doctoral student and team member, told MIT News, « The Artemis missions will really focus on construction and excavation, so the risk of falling is much higher. We think that SuperLimbs can help them recover so they can be more productive, and extend their EVAs. »
